How to Protect Yourself from Mosquitoes, Insects & Rabies While Travelling
Thailand is a fantastic destination to explore, from tropical islands and lush national parks to vibrant cities and ancient temples. Like many tropical countries, however, mosquitoes and other biting insects are present throughout the year.
Although most insect bites are harmless, some mosquitoes can carry diseases such as dengue fever. There is currently no widely available vaccine for many mosquito-borne illnesses affecting travellers, making insect bite prevention in Thailand one of the most important travel health precautions.
Why Mosquito Bite Prevention Matters
Mosquitoes can be active during both the day and night, depending on the species. They are commonly found in cities, rural villages, forests, beaches, gardens, and near standing water.
Protecting yourself from mosquito bites significantly reduces your risk of illnesses including:
- Dengue fever
- Chikungunya
- Zika virus (in some regions)
- Japanese encephalitis (mainly in rural areas)
Although the overall risk for most travellers is low, taking simple precautions can make your trip much safer.
How to Avoid Mosquito & Insect Bites
One of the easiest ways to stay healthy while travelling is to minimise insect bites whenever possible.
We recommend that travellers:
- Wear lightweight long-sleeved shirts and long trousers, especially during dawn and dusk.
- Choose loose-fitting clothing rather than tight fabrics.
- Apply insect repellent to all exposed skin.
- Reapply repellent according to the manufacturer’s instructions, especially after swimming or excessive sweating.
- Sleep in air-conditioned or well-screened rooms whenever possible.
- Use a mosquito net if staying in accommodation without window screens or air conditioning.
- Keep doors and windows closed where possible
Choosing an Insect Repellent
A good quality insect repellent is one of the most effective ways to prevent mosquito bites.
Repellents containing DEET (up to 50%), picaridin (also known as icaridin), or oil of lemon eucalyptus are commonly recommended for travellers.
If you are travelling to remote areas, bring enough insect repellent from home, as your preferred product may not always be available locally.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check that the product is suitable for children or sensitive skin if applicable.
Outdoor Activities
If your itinerary includes trekking, waterfalls, national parks, jungle walks, cycling, or camping, you may encounter more insects than in urban areas.
During outdoor activities:
- Wear closed shoes instead of sandals whenever practical.
- Avoid heavily scented perfumes or lotions that may attract insects.
- Check for ticks after hiking through long grass or forested areas.
- Carry insect repellent with you throughout the day.
Rabies Awareness
Rabies is present in Thailand, although the risk for most visitors remains low when sensible precautions are followed.
Avoid touching or feeding:
- Dogs (including friendly-looking pets)
- Cats
- Monkeys
- Bats
- Other wild or stray animals
Monkeys found at temples and tourist attractions may appear accustomed to people but can bite or scratch unexpectedly if they feel threatened or are protecting food.
Never attempt to take food away from monkeys or encourage close contact for photographs.
What to Do if You Are Bitten or Scratched
If you are bitten or scratched by any mammal:
- Immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
- Apply an antiseptic if available.
- Seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if the injury appears minor.
Prompt medical treatment is essential because rabies is almost always preventable when appropriate post-exposure treatment is started quickly.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical advice promptly if you experience:
- A high fever
- Severe headache
- Persistent muscle or joint pain
- Skin rash
- Difficulty breathing
- Increasing redness or swelling around an insect bite
If you become unwell during your holiday or after returning home, tell your doctor that you have recently travelled to Thailand. Your travel history can help medical professionals make an accurate diagnosis.
